We long to ensure that every student who attends our conferences has a meaningful and encouraging experience. We also recognize that sensory sensitivities can at times create obstacles to that goal. This web page is intended to provide accurate information about what you can expect at our conferences and any resources we plan to provide for those with sensory sensitivities.
What to Expect At each session:
Main Sessions
These sessions have the most people (200 to 600, depending on the conference)
Approximately 1.5 - 2 hours
1 - 2 main sessions each day
Usually includes worship. While we actively seek to keep volumes down so that the congregation can be heard, worship can be loud. (Note accommodations below)
Breakouts/Workshops
These sessions have fewer people (50 to 150, depending on the conference)
Approximately 45 - 60 minutes
Up to 2 sessions each day (depending on the schedule)
Usually no worship
Can be interactive or include breaking into small groups for discussion
Meal times
At meals, there usually are 250+ people in one room
30 - 60 minutes
Often loud and tight seating to fit everyone
Campus times
Meeting with all students from your campus
Approximately 60 minutes
Usually includes either a game or a discussion reflecting on the previous session
Accommodations we may provide:
Main Sessions:
DM provides earplugs at the Event Planning table in the back of the main session room. You are always welcome to bring your own accessories to help with sensory needs (ear plugs, sunglasses, fidgets, etc).
The loudest and brightest spots will be right next to the speakers and stage. Plan to sit towards the back for decreased volume and for the opportunity to stand if needed.
Our worship team usually has one set during the conference that is acoustic. Ask a staff member for when this might be.
If you need to move around or stand, you are always welcome to join others in the back of the room
Often we are able to set-up the sound from main sessions to be heard in the lobby area if you need a quieter space to enjoy the session or to take a break.
Meal Times:
Depending on the conference, there may be a quieter room available for dining. Check in with a staff member for more information about this.
