I didn’t grow up going to church or reading the Bible, though I
thought I had a basic
understanding of what Christianity was, but it was nothing more than
history, facts, and a guide of morals. That first week at college I meet
Elizabeth Hagerup, a DM staff worker, and a student starting a bible
study. As they continued to reach out to me, I started coming to Bible
study and some of the large group fellowship
meetings. They studied the Bible, they were sincere, admitted they
weren’t perfect either, and they prayed a lot. As I began to realize
we all do not go to heaven and that I deserved death, I started to see
my need for a savior. I can’t pinpoint a time but when I got on the
plane to go home for Christmas, it was no longer facts but an actual
relationship with the Lord.
It wasn’t until my sophomore year that God began to really transform me from a quiet, fearful girl to someone who would reach out to others and obey him with all her heart. The key was my one-on-one time with Elizabeth (discipling) that deepened my faith and relationship with Christ. During that time, Elizabeth would help me to see my sin and point me to Christ and to learn to lead Bible studies. She answered any questions I had, challenged me, encouraged me and poured out Christ love to me. A challenge would be as simple as just inviting a girl to have lunch with me just to get to know her better. Just to do that use to terrify me!
By my senior year, I was on the Exec team leading the fellowship, leading my own evangelistic Bible study, discipling two younger women, and reaching out to other women in the dorms. What I've find most amazing is that God would choose me, an extremely shy girl who was obsessed with getting perfect grades, to do this work. That He would take the time to teach me to overcome my shyness and to take time out of my life to help others.
When I came to college, I never imagined I’d be doing what I am doing now! But knowing how much Christ has done in my life through this ministry along with seeing others come to know the Lord and grow in their faith has compelled me to go into ministry. I want to give other college students what God gave me, Christ. And there is no greater blessing or joy then having the privilege of being used by God and see him transform lives.
